The game does not rely on cheap jump scares so much like say dead space but rather with oppressive atmosphere and environment and being also completely defenseless. you don't fight back in Amnesia. You don't get weapons. You run and hide and you think, or you die. A lot.

I watched the first 10-15 minutes of a playthrough on Youtube and its not that bad as far as I can tell. Its mostly puzzle solving and exploring a somewhat dark castle in first person. If you want scary then play Ju-On: The Grudge for Wii. That ***** pops up out of nowhere A LOT and makes me scream. Silent Hill is good for scares too, especially SH3. Fatal Frame makes me panic too, cause your only weapon is a camera and some of the ghosts move way too fast. Resident Evil 4 is really scary too, especially when your being bombarded by a horde of those damn zombies.

A few things I've noticed in the game, I'm wondering, are they The Shadow, or are they more of Alexanders alchemy abominations? I.e.: The trees falling when you're on the window ledges, the being that chases you when you escape from the prison, and the red slimey stuff?In Amnesia: The Dark Descent, are these related to/the shadow?
The Shadow - An unseen force that is hunting Daniel. Its sole purpose is to guard the Orb that Daniel took from the burial chamber and has killed numerous people to achieve that end. While it is not seen as a physical being, it is described as a huge sluggish mass of darkness and leaves behind a fleshy damaging substance over anything it touches. One note hypothesizes that it is the will of the universe seeking to catch up with and contain the unnatural force of the Orb itself, but this might only have been colorful speculation.
The Gatherers - The main enemies of the game. They are Alexander's servants who were deformed when they drank wine poisoned by Alexander, and are seen as monstrous humanoids with deformed facial and bodily features. These enemies come in two variations, Grunts and Brutes, and patrol parts of Brennenburg Castle, attacking Daniel if sighted. Since Daniel is weaponless, they cannot be killed and have to be avoided. Grunts are horrifyingly disfigured monstrosities which have had their hands cut off and replaced with iron claws. Their offset eyes resemble those of a reptile. They appear to have had their lower jaw severed, and it now flops out over their chest. Brutes are malformed humanoids wearing overalls and with frankenstein-esque bolts and nails jutting out of their flesh. They attack with a blade on an iron pole sticking out of their arm. An interesting note on the possible origin of the Gatherers can be found in the Wine Cellar, where a flashback Daniel has depicts a group of Alexander's men having horrific bodily reactions to wine they consumed, saying things such as "I feel like my chest is going to burst!". One particular note, however, states that they are deserters of the Thirty Years' War, who got lost in the forests around Brennenburg, forced to forever haunt it, dragging with them anyone unlucky enough to venture in. These creatures cannot be killed; however if an object such as a rock or barrel is thrown at one, it will become momentarily immobilized, leaving the player a small window to escape.

I have a question about the game Amnesia: The Dark Descent. In the game there are some broken windows, so why doesn't Daniel just jump out of them? I'm not saying to end the story, but just to give it a little twist like say he could end up back in the mansion when he wakes up? Amnesia Dark Descent Black Screen?
I recently downloaded Amnesia the dark descent PC game but it's not working. The game starts up fine and I create my account and select "begin story mode" and it starts, but all I see is a black screen. While in this phase I can open my inventory with the tab button and even check my journal, I hear the noises of the castle, but I can't see the actual game. Disable visual themes, Disable desktop compesition and disable display scaling, click ok ok.

If you have a good connection I think I saw it on onlive. It plays the game on their servers and you play.

I just bought amnesia the dark descent off of steam. Once I started playing the game I realized that my graphics were messed up. I tried to fix them but nothing was working.

I've heard from almost everyone that amnesia is one of the best games made. I ended up reading into it and it sounded cool and all, but quite frankly, what stops me from getting this is the aspect where you essentially can't engage in any combat what so ever. I recently downloaded Amnesia the dark descent PC game but it's not working. The game starts up fine and I create my account and select "begin story mode" and it starts, but all I see is a black screen. While in this phase I can open my inventory with the tab button and even check my journal, I hear the noises of the castle, but I can't see the actual game. Finished it last month after starting it at Xmas, could only play for a little while, then one weekend I sat down and finished it. Playing it with the lights off and 5.1 surround sound headphones makes it very scary. Its just that noise when a creature sees you, as you run for a hiding place. The environments are so well crafted to induce fear and suspense. The Water monster sections were a bit annoying though as at first I couldn't work out what was killing me. From what i've seen it has some very nice scares. There's a lot of run away from something that you don't know what it is, and compared to the silent hill series you would likely enjoy it. If you dont believe me what some of the reaction videos on youtube.
Also if your looking for good pc games be sure to check out killing floor and minecraft.
Well from personal experience, I would say it's not much as scary as it makes you EXTREMELY Paranoid because you have nothing besides a Lantern and you can't see the things chasing you. So like the other guy said, there is a lot of running away. But Overall I still recommend this game, because it will make you jump a lot. ;)

How scary is Amnesia: The Dark Descent?Well from personal experience, I would say it's not much as scary as it makes you EXTREMELY Paranoid because you have nothing besides a Lantern and you can't see the things chasing you. I just started playing amnesia and im curious, when do the monsters start patrolling and showing up in the game and when are they dangerous? (what area). Are monster encounters random, or are they scripted? If you could tell me all the heavy monster areas that would be great. Im afraid to start playing but really want to!

Then from there most of the monster encounters are dangerous. I'm not going to spoil much for you, but beware of the storage. I just downloaded this off steam. It works fine except for I can't look around and move forward/back whatever at the same time. It's annoying and leads to problems in gameplay. This can't be normal, can it? How could I resolve this? I already went through key configuration, so it can't be the problem.

I believe they did this last year, put up several horror titles like Resident Evil and Dead Space and others. If they do have the sale, then I imagine that they would include Amnesia as well so I would just say be patient and wait another few weeks and see what happens.

It's not like most games, it can be a very intense experience if you block out the real world(turning out the lights and using noise canceling headphones does help). One of the reasons this game actually succeeds to be scary while a lot of other games that try fail is because it keeps you in the dark, it doesn't reveal much to you, ever, you don't usually see the monster that's trying to kill you, and you can't really fight it, you're helpless in a lot of ways, and that element of the unknown is what sets the game apart. I do have to say though, if you are looking for a mainstream "horror" game, like doom 3 or Clive Barkers Jericho, this isn't like that.
